AUGUST UPDATES: 2024 NOGA Match Play Championships

The 2024 NOGA Match Play Brackets are starting to heat up as every Bracket has at least made it to the Quarterfinal matches. The next few weeks will decide who will take home the Championships in each of the five 2024 NOGA Season Long Match Play Brackets.

Great Lakes Auto Scratch Individual Matches

Championship Division

Half of the Great Lakes Auto Scratch Series Championship Stroke Play Final has been decided ten days before the deadline for the Semifinal matches.

Ian Hardesty, the defending Tour Championship winner, has punched his ticket to the Championship Division final after beating Chris Okeson 4-up. Hardesty, the number four overall seed, will face the winner of the other Semifinal between Brian Smith and Christopher Brown, who upset the number one overall seed in the Quarterfinals. If Brian Smith wins the Semifinal match, he will host the Finals match; if Christopher Brown wins, Hardesty will be the host.

Senior Division

Dean Cutlip, one of the Semifinalists in the Senior Stroke Play Bracket

The final four is set for the Senior Scratch Stroke Play Bracket, and all four players are top 10 overall seeds. The Semifinalists include Jim Durr, Mike Belacic, Dean Cutlip, and Robert Schustrich.

After defeating the number one overall seed in the Quarterfinals, Robert Schustrich will take on the number 4 seed Jim Durr. Durr is coming off a 2-up win over the defending NOGA Senior Player of the Year, Mark Borlin.

The other Semifinal match will feature Dean Cutlip, who upset the number two overall seed in the Quarterfinals, and Mike Belacic, who is coming off a 5&4 win. Belacic will host his fourth straight match in the tournament. Both matches must be completed by Sunday, August 18th.

Great Lakes Auto Scratch Four-Ball Matches

Championship Division

Michael Klaric III, Four-Ball finalist and teammate of Chris Okeson

The 2024 Great Lakes Auto Scratch Four-Ball Championship is set, as the number five seed Chris Okeson and Michael Klaric III will host the number fourteen seed, Jeff Meagrow and John Bernatovicz.

Okeson and Klaric’s Semifinal match was as close as you can get, with the pairing having to go to extra holes to decide the match. The two were able to take care of business after 19 holes to upset the number one overall seed and punch their ticket to the Championship match.

Meagrow and Bernatovicz were in a close one as well, as they headed to the 18th tee one up on the number seven overall seed. The duo was able to win the 18th hole to give them a shot at the title.

Okeson and Klaric will host the Championship match and the two teams will have until Sunday, August 25th to complete it.

Senior Division

Mark Borlin, Four-Ball finalist and teammate of Allen Freeman

Two teams remain in the Scratch Senior Four-Ball Bracket, as the number two seed Mark Borlin and Allen Freeman will host the number five seed Mark Thomas and Bob Spino for the Championship. Borlin and Freeman will go into the Championship match after hosting every other match during the tournament. They took down the number six overall seed in the Semifinals, winning one up after 18 holes. For Thomas and Spino, this will be there second time having to go “on the road” for a match during this tournament. The pairing comes into the Championship Match after beating the number 17 overall seed 5&4 yesterday afternoon. The two teams will have until Sunday, August 25th to complete the Championship Match.

Sikich Net Stroke Play Matches

The Sikich Net Stroke Play Bracket is now into the Quarterfinals. Only four of the eight remaining players are seeded within the top ten from the Match Play Qualifier in May.

The players outside of the top ten that are still remaining are the sixteen seed Adam Blum, the twelfth seed Tim Reed, the twenty-third seed David Piros, and the thirtieth seed Danny Reaser. There was one Round of 16 result that stood out, and it came from the lowest overall seed that is still in the tournament. The 2nd overall seed Jim Crandall won his Round of 16 match 8&7. Crandall will look to keep this play rolling into the Quarterfinals as he will face David Piros.

Sikich Net Four-Ball Matches

The Sikich Net Four-Ball Bracket has made it to the Quarterfinals as well, with one Quarterfinal match already completed. The number ten overall seed of Chris and Tim Reed have already punched their ticket to the Semifinals. Six of the seven remaining teams are top ten overall seeds, the other remaining team is the 33rd overall seed Pat and Kevin Tournoux. After upsetting the number one overall seed in the Round of 32, the pairing followed that up by beating the seventeenth overall seed in extra holes.

Old-Pal Net Four-Ball Matches

Aaron Kazan, Old-Pal Finalist and teammate of Kevin McAfee

The Old-Pal Finals match is set, as the number five seed Owen Kitz and Grant Tefft will face off against the number fifteen seed Aaron Kazan and McAfee.

Kitz and Tefft come into the Finals after upsetting the number one overall seed 4&3 in the Semifinals, and will host a match for the first time since the opening round of the tournament. The other pairing is no stranger to having to go on the road for their matches, as Kazan and McAfee have yet to host a match this summer. The number fifteen seed is coming off a close semifinal match that they won on the final hole, beating the number fourteen overall seed. The pairings will have until Sunday, August 18th to complete this match.
