With a long string of victories during the early part of the season and a strong close right near the end, Shayne Bishop and Ken Koprivec finished the Chippewa Scratch League as the top two players on the 2016 Leaderboard.
The pair had an amazing run during the early summer months, marked by a stretch where they earned a top-3 finish in 7 of 9 weeks — mostly as the winners, including one week where they shot a scorching 7-under par 29 in the scramble format on the back nine.
Ken missed two rounds in which Shayne earned a few bucks playing with a sub, and that was the difference that allowed Bishop to claim the 2017 Chippewa Golf Club membership as the top player in the Scratch League. But Shayne made it clear: “I played pretty well all year, but without a doubt I rode Kenny’s putter for a good part of the season.”
Bobby Spino and Dan Marr took advantage of the extra large skins pot in the Week 18 finale. A tidy $570 was in play for skins because of a carry-over from previous week, and the pair won two of the four skins earned on the night. They also played well throughout, tying for first place in two of the three 3-hole segments and the overall event. All told, that gave them a healthy haul of $642 to split on the evening; a nice couple hour’s work.
Allen Freeman and Ty Kovach also had a good night, matching Spino and Marr step-for-step in score and finish position. They tied for first or second in all three segments and for first place overall, netting $358. But their two good birdie chances were covered by one other team each time, preventing them from winning the skin they needed to have a chance at catching Bishop and Koprivec.
Bobby Spino’s big take launched him over the top of Freeman (by $12!) and Mike Simpson to finish in third place on the 2016 Leaderboard. Kovach, Marr, Mike Armour and Chris Okeson round out the top 10.
The Scratch League players thank Chippewa CEO Kevin Larizza and the rest of the Chippewa Golf Club staff for taking great care of us all season long. We all look forward to returning in 2017 as the Scratch League continues its upward trend.
Remember, the Monday $50 noon skins game will continue to play as long as the weather holds (just $25 for golf + cart all day long!), and there is a nine hole game immediately following that starting around 4 pm. So get out to Chippewa for some Fall golf on Mondays.
