No one wanted to win.
Sure, several hole locations were in some very tough spots.
Yes, there was some wind and the spring rough is pretty thick right now.
And of course the format was the challenging ‘combined score shamble’, where both players tee off and the best shot is selected for stroke play from there, with both scores counting for the team total.
But really, let’s call it what it was: a gag-fest.
The best score on the night was a 3-OVER PAR 75 by Ty Kovach and Allen Freeman. Case in point, both players made bogey from the middle of the fairway from 105 yards out on the 18th hole, and that was still good enough to win by one.
Joe Flossie and Rick Smith nabbed second place at 4-over par.
Just about every team went sideways for a hole or two, and that was enough to make for an unbelievable evening of final results.
At least the skins-win story is stronger, as Black Doty and Steve Bednar nabbed the only skin of the evening when both players made birdie on the par-5 10th that played directly into the wind.
So the 2015 Leaderboard is getting tighter, as the wealth is spread around…
REMINDER: There will be no Scratch League play next week Monday, as it is Memorial Day. But Mike Armour will be running the annual Chippewa Memorial Day $100 Skins Game with tee times between 12 noon and 12:45p sharp. $100 skins entry for ams, $150 for pros.
ALSO REMEMBER: tell all your golf buddies about the change in league operations for the 2015 season! Any 2-player amateur team can play any week — no pre-registration or year-long commitment required. Details here. Let’s build up some great league-night fields as we head into the beautiful upcoming summer months!
