League Director Kevin Larizza wanted to host a Double-Down 3/3/3 event on the final Monday evening of the 2015 Chippewa Scratch League to give players a chance to make a big move up the season-long leaderboard. With five different pots in play, he wanted to create some drama and get a big field with some big prizes at stake.
Whew, was that idea spot-on.
Headed into the final official evening, Allen Freeman led partner Ty Kovach by $53 and Mike Simpson by $350.
So Simpson dusted off his best ‘sometimes partner’ Jim Krivanek to make a run at the leaders.
Another spot-on idea.
All looked good for Freeman and Kovach as they played a solid three holes in the Scramble format on holes 10-12. The pair narrowly missed their eagle putt on 10, converted a long eagle putt on 11 (a skin opportunity covered only by a bomb from Russ Rykba in the same group!), and just missed a birdie putt on 12.
But after that, it was all Simpson and Krivanek.
The challengers won both the Better Ball format AND the Shamble Aggregate format, posting a score of 1-under par on each set of three holes.
They also nabbed one of three skins won on the evening with a birdie-par shamble combination on the tough par-3 17th hole.
And they took the overall event victory by a single shot over three teams, including Freeman and Kovach.
Eyeballing the scoreboard, it became clear that the final money totals for the season were close. It was going to take calculators, pads and pencils to determine who would come out on top of the 2015 Chippewa Scratch League Leaderboard.
It added up like this:
With those four wins in five opportunities, Simpson and Krivanek took home a whopping total of $933 on the evening, $466.50 each.
Snagging a T1 and a couple of T2s, Freeman and Kovach won $273 for the finale, for $136.50 each.
That gave Simpson a positive balance of $330 on the evening against Freeman — less than $20 short of catching him for the 19 week season! Kovach finished in third place $34 behind Simpson, and Krivanek jumped into fourth with the big final night.
The Double-Down was a great way to finish off the official league events for the year, especially with the great steak dinner after play. Thanks to Kevin and all his staff for taking such great care of the players all season!
And as long as the weather cooperates, the $50 noon Big Skins game will continue on, as will an individual 9-hole $20 skins game every Monday starting at 4p…
