Chippewa Scratch League Director Kevin Larizza made a bad call.
A storm ripped through Chippewa Golf Club on Monday at 7:30p, dumping so much rain for so long that the league night looked like was a washout. Only half the field had finished, there were giant puddles everywhere, and enough players were urging him for a decision that he decided to call it — even though there was more than an hour-and-a-half of daylight left.
But 15 minutes after that decision, the sun came back out. And in another 15 minutes, the water on the final four greens had receded enough to allow play to resume. Almost half of the teams who did not finish their round had left the golf course. Larizza was stuck.
So Kevin decided to resume play for the teams who remained. For the teams who left without finishing, he decided that they would get their entry fees moved to the following week without affecting the gift certificate payouts for the current week.
It was a veteran decision.
Dave Oates and partner Sam Spino Jr. lapped the field with a sterling 7-under par score in the Shamble-Better Ball format to win by two shots. There were three skins won on the night. But the real champ on July 14th was Kevin Larizza…
