2012 U.S. Women’s Amateur Coming to The Country Club; Volunteers Needed

The Country Club in Pepper Pike will play host to a USGA national golf championship this coming summer: the 112th U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship, on August 6-12, 2012.

And they need some volunteer help to make it a great event.

The following is a press release about the club’s volunteer recruiting effort that kicked off today:

Cleveland (March 1, 2012) ““ The Country Club, one of Northeast Ohio’s preeminent golf courses, today launched volunteer registration for the 112th U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship, taking place Aug. 6-12, 2012.

Individuals aged 12 and older can sign up for various opportunities at 2012USWomensAm.com.

Training will be provided for all volunteers prior to the championship.

Conducted by the United States Golf Association, the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship was first held in 1895, marking the beginning of women’s competitive golf in this country. The 2012 championship will begin Aug. 6 with 156 of the world’s best female amateur golfers playing 36 holes of stroke play over two days. The low 64 players will then compete in match play from Aug. 8-12, with the champion determined by a 36-hole final match.

The Country Club needs 300 volunteers to fulfill a variety of on- and off-course positions, including player registration, volunteer services, on-course food and drink supply, transportation, clubhouse access control, disabled spectator services, practice range and airport greeters.

Additional positions include:

“¢ Marshal/Forecaddie: Stationed on a hole or assigned to walk with a match to assist with gallery control and spectator safety;

“¢ Walking Scorer: Assigned to walk with a group to keep the players’ unofficial scores and communicate the information after each hole via electronic handheld device;

“¢ Standard Bearer: Assigned to walk with a match and carry a sign displaying the status of the match; and,

“¢ Television: Assigned to walk with a match and assist Golf Channel personnel.

“Volunteers are an intrinsic part of the success of this championship,” said Sally Terrell, volunteer services chair for the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship. “Our goal is to provide our volunteers with a memorable and enjoyable experience by being part of this world-class championship.”

The Country Club’s storied history is unique and important to the development of the game of golf and to the early country-club scene in America. In 1935, The Country Club hosted the U.S. Amateur Championship, where Lawson Little completed his “Little Slam,” winning the British and U.S. Amateur titles in two successive seasons. This championship was played on the course designed by William Flynn in 1928, the same layout that will host the 2012 U.S. Women’s Amateur.

The Country Club is located at 2825 Lander Road, Pepper Pike, Ohio.
