Amateurs Dominate U.S. Open Local Qualifying

USGAIn an event typically dominated by professionals, amateurs Patrick Rodgers of Avon, IN and Dr. Jeff Mallette of North Canton claimed the top two places of seven total spots in Thursday’s U.S. Open local qualifying event at Weymouth Country Club in Medina.

Rodgers posted a 4-under par 68 to take the medalist honors, while Mallette shot 2-under par 70 to tie with professional Garrett Frank of Youngstown for second place. And the “am invasion” didn’t stop there.

In a four-way tie for fourth place, two more amateurs joined with two professionals in moving  on to Sectional Qualifying. Ams Darren Phipps of Hartville and Chris Robertson of Rittman tied professionals Brian Unk of Lewis Center and Steve Mulcahy of Lima at 1-under par 71.

So in the end, an under par score was required, and four amateurs and three professionals earned the right to move on to 36-holes of Sectional Qualifying at various sites in two weeks. Congratulations to all of these players!
