20 Rules for ’19: #1 – Standards of Player Conduct

USGA logoIt’s certainly not be the most game-technical change to the 2019 Rules of Golf, but the Expected Standards of Player Conduct outlined in Rule 1.2a sure are some of the most important in the life scheme.

These revised Rules reinforces that golf is just a game and that it should be fun to play.

It’s pretty simple, really: Act with integrity. Show consideration to others. Take good care of the course.

High standards of conduct are expected from players, and the 2019 Rules declare this in a clear and direct way.

A Code of Player Conduct now gives some teeth to this thinking, too. The Committee can adopt its own Code that sets standards for how players must conduct themselves, with 1-shot and 2-shot penalties for breaching those standards. The Committee can lay down a DQ if need be, too.

Look, even the most competitive tournaments should still be played for fun. Because golf is a game. Rule 1.2a lays that down that fact for players who forget…
