Dustin Alcorn has been working to put together a 2013 season for the Stark County Amateur Golf Association. But now he faces a brand new setback: the organization has lost the SCAGA.com domain that it has used for its website for the last 11 years.
Alcorn has been aware for a few months that the domain was set to expire in November, but was waiting for 2012 director Mike Marino to provide account information for the website.
“Unfortunately we didn’t know who to contact about our site,” says Alcorn. “I’m not trying to make excuses but we were literally told nothing. It took multiple emails and texts to get what info we did receive.”
“We wanted to also be in control of the hosting and obviously the domain SCAGA.com,” Alcorn concluded.
In reality, the issue could have been handled with a quick call to the existing registrar offering to pay the fee to renew the domain — even without the account information. Contact information for an existing domain registrar and hosting company is easily found online.
SCAGA.com now shows a ‘parking page’ that speculative domain buyers often use to make a few bucks while they shop the domain on the market.
Based on similar situations, SCAGA can expect to pay anywhere from as little as $250-300 (which would be a bargain!) to as much as several thousand dollars to get the domain back from a speculator.
As to the next step, Alcorn stated, “If we are unable to get SCAGA.com back, then we are thinking about going SCAGA.us or SCAGA.org.”
