On July 31st, the Northern Ohio Golf Association, in conjunction with the USGA, hosted the US Women’s Mid-Am Qualifier at Portage Country Club in Akron, Ohio. Although the field was small, the competition was strong as 10 players battled for two Qualifying spots and two alternates.
Olivia Hochschwender was the medalist for the event, finishing her round at +1 (72). Olivia, a member of Portage Country Club, dissected the course today and made very few mistakes on her round. She started her day with a bogey on the par-4 1st. Hochschwender collected herself and proceeded to par the next six holes. Her knowledge of the course came in handy when she was on the par-3 8th, where she drilled a birdie put from over 25 feet away. Olivia would follow that up with bogeys on holes 9 and 11 but finished her round strong with a birdie on the par-4 17th.
Sabrina Coffman was the second qualifier from today’s event. She found herself behind early, as she was +4 through five holes. Sabrina went birdie, bogey, and birdie on holes 7, 8, and 9, respectively, to finish her front-9. On the back, Coffman played consistent golf. She had bogies on holes 11 and 14 but finished her round strong with a birdie on the par-5 18th. That final birdie was enough for Coffman to avoid a playoff and qualify at +4 (75).
The qualifying players will head to Brae Burn Country Club in West Newton, MA on September 7-12.
