The 18th hole at Boulder Creek Golf Club in Streetsboro made all the difference in the NOHIO.GOLF Series 2-Player Scramble on Saturday.
Mike Simpson + Bobby Spino, both from Uniontown, had a dream finish at Boulder: they made birdie on holes 14 through 16, then capped their round with an eagle-3 at the par-5 closing hole. Their 5-under for the last five holes jumped them to a 9-under-par total of 63.
Playing in the group behind Simpson + Spino, Matthew Frey + Michael Fierst, both from Broadview Heights, were near the top of the leaderboard all day. They made birdie at the tricky par-3 17th hole to match the 9-under par score in the clubhouse. The stage was set on the par-5 18th for them to earn a solo victory, but the pair couldn’t manage to get the birdie they needed and finished in a tie at the top.
Matt Mullen of Akron + Adam Frey of Hudson also had a solid chance at victory on Saturday. They jumped out to the early lead with a front-nine score of 31, then birdied their way to 8-under par with three holes to play. But they finished their round with three straight pars coming in, and had to settle for a three-way tie for third place.
Four teams split the skins pot at Boulder Creek, including a hole-out eagle-2 at the uphill par-4 15th hole by Mathew May of Columbiana + David Kilgore from Lisbon.
