On a beautiful day for golf, Ironwood Golf Course in Hinckley hosted the first Cleveland Metroparks Golf 7-Club Tournament, with 20 players competing. The course was set up short at just 5,537 yards, but the hole locations were a bit challenging.
Lakewood’s Colin Burns made eight birdies and a bogey to earn a two-shot victory over Jimmy Wild of Sagamore Hills. Burns turned in 3-under par 33 after making an eagle on the par-5 ninth. Then he reeled off three consecutive birdies at 11-12-13 before closing with a birdie at the last for a back nine 31 and a 7-under par total of 64.
Wild matched Burns in the total birdie count, but bogeys at 5, 10, and 17 hurt his cause. Wild finished at 5-under par 66.
Recent Cleveland Amateur Championship winner Lucas Liberatore of Lakewood finished in third place at 4-under par 67, and Brecksville’s Allen Freeman rounded out the prize payouts at 68.
The final event of the Cleveland Metroparks Golf season comes in two Saturdays, on September 7th at Sleepy Hollow, with the playing of the long-running Bill Barbour Cup jumble format tournament.
