The father-and-son team of Dave Kurtz of Hudson and Will Kurtz of Tremont wasted no time in making a statement that they were the team to beat in Saturday’s NOHIO.GOLF Series Oak Shadows 2-Player Better Ball.
On the par-5 first hole, dad Dave made birdie then son Will converted an eagle to win a skin and open the tournament at 2-under par after one. It was off to the races from there.
Will, who played for the Kent State golf team until 2021 and now works as a financial planner, made six birdies and an eagle in his round.
Dave, a coach with the Hudson High School Boys Golf team, picked up the slack as necessary. He made a couple of covering pars on the front nine, but then really stepped it up down the stretch. He made critical birdies at the par-3 15th and the par-4 17th, while covering another par on the 16th to separate the team from any potential challengers.
Kurtz + Kurtz finished with an eye-popping score of 9-under par 63, good for a four-shot victory over Justin Trzebuckowski of Broadview Heights and Allen Freeman of Brecksville. Three teams finished tied for third place another four shots behind that.
This was the first trip for the NOHIO.GOLF Series to Oak Shadows, as last year’s scheduled event was rained out. The course features a fantastic layout that winds around hills, heather, and hazards, with fun to putt green complexes. It’s definitely worth the trip south and the course will be back on the schedule in 2024.
