RESULTS: 2022 Loby’s Tigertown Open

Lobys Tigertown OpenThe Elms Country Club in Massillon was set with perfect scoring conditions: a needed rain on Wednesday made the greens receptive and smooth; there was barely a hint of wind all day; the weather was sunny, bright and warm.

Many of the 175 players competing in the 71st playing of this Northern Ohio tournament took advantage, some much more than others.

After the Morning Wave of play, it looked like four players — two pros and two ams — were going to share the 2022 Loby’s Tigertown Open title.

Ryan Gutowski
Ryan Gutowski

Ryan Gutowski of Akron, a reinstated amateur and the defending Tigertown Amateur champ, made a ferocious closing run to set the benchmark. Turning at just 2-under par and stalled there for the first four holes of his back nine, Gutowski made an eagle at the drivable par-4 14th hole, then closed with birdies on three of his last four holes, including the 18th.

Three groups later, Fredricksburg’s TT Crouch posted the first Professional 7-under par 65 of the tournament. His score looked like it would be an 8-under par 64, but a missed up-and-down at the last slid him back into a tie.

Vaughn Snyder, 2022 Tigertown
Vaughn Snyder

One group after that, Canton’s Vaughn Snyder, another reinstated am, was bogey-free at 7-under par through 17 holes and had a makeable birdie look from 6-feet after a great approach into 18. But his hard-right-to-left effort never touched the hole.

Then defending Professional champion Nathan Tarter of Mogadore made his late kick. With three bogeys on his front nine and a turn score of 34, it looked like his title defense would come up a good bit short. But a sizzling six birdies on the back nine, including one at the last, put Tarter into a four-way tie for the top spot, and a two-way tie for the Pro prize of $5,000.

(A tip of the cap to Canton amateur Kyle Jones, who reached 7-under par on his round but made bogey at the tough 203-yard par-3 17th to finish one back of the Morning Wave pack.)

The start of the Afternoon Wave was eye-popping. Canton pro Logan Lagodich jumped into a tie for the lead at 7-under par — after his first nine holes! Starting on the back nine at The Elms, Lagodich birdied every hole but the 10th and 17th. After a birdie at the first to go to 8-under par, it looked like a coronation had begun. But a bogey at four, a double-bogey at six and a bogey at seven crushed all chances at a victory. To his credit, Lagodich made birdies on the 8th and 9th to finish at 6-under par.

Blake Sattler, 2022 Tigertown Open Champion
Blake Sattler made this putt at the 9th to claim an outright victory in the 2022 Loby’s Tigertown Open.

Playing late in the Afternoon Wave starting off the back nine, 2020 Tigertown champion Blake Sattler of Dover made the birdies that are required of the champion to turn at 4-under par. Then on the front side, he continued his bogey-free streak while making birdie at the second and third.

Standing on the eighth tee needing two birdies in his last two holes to pass the pack and win outright, Sattler did just that. From eight feet below the par-5 eighth, he split the middle of the cup with his birdie putt. Then from 18 feet with some left-to-right break at the ninth, he buried the putt to claim the title outright.

Kevin Kraft, 2022 Tigertown Open
Kevin Kraft

In the Senior Professional Division, Kevin Kraft, a former Lakewood resident now living in Maryland, put together a six-birdie, two-bogey round of 68 to capture the age 50+ pro title by two shots over Jay Jurecic of Crystal Falls, Michigan.

Larry Lahnan, 2022 Tigertown
Larry Lahnan

In the Senior Amateur Division, Aurora’s Larry Lahnan made a clutch birdie at his final hole to sneak past the morning pace-setting round by New Franklin’s Bobby Spino. Lahnan finished at 3-under par 69 to win by one shot.

A sincere thank you to Loby’s Grille for their title sponsorship. Also a big thank you to Benmit Pipe & Tubing Services, and Sean Croell and the Northern Ohio Golf Association, for the Live Scoring operations — the players and fans loved it! An additional thank you to Tony Mastrianni and everyone at The Elms for all the hard work prepping the course for the day. With all of that support, the 71st Loby’s Tigertown Open was a complete success.
