GREEN’S SILAS KIRKPATRICK STUNS FIELD WITH 67 IN 41ST KENNY NOVAK JUNIOR TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP
Silas Kirkpatrick shot a bogey-free round of 5-under par 67 on Tuesday to take the first-round lead in the 41st Kenny Novak Northern Ohio PGA Junior Tour Championship at Club Walden in Aurora.
Kirkpatrick, who will be a junior at Green High, will take a commanding 4-shot lead into Tuesday’s final 18 holes in the 16-19 age group.
Aurora’s Gracyn Vidovic (top photo) also went bogey-free to take a 4-shot lead in the 16-19 age group.
Lorain’s Prince Tran, who attends Marion Steele High in Amherst, is second after an opening one-under 71.
On a day when many players alternated between playing under a blazing sun and dodging raindrops and sporadic winds, Kirkpatrick, Tran, and Vidovic were the lone players in the field of 128 to break par.
Players in the afternoon wave were peppered by three showers that made Walden play longer than its 6,899 yards.
The competition was held in five age groups, three for the boys and two for the girls. Here is how things unfolded:
BOYS 16-19: No one in any age group played better than Kirkpatrick, who will be a junior at Green High. The 16-year-old had two birdies on the front and three on the back in going 34-33.
Tran, playing Walden for the first time, was almost as efficient with four birdies and three bogeys with nines of 34-37. He holds sole possession of second place, one shot in front of Canal Fulton’s Zachary Huscusson (36-36). Four players share fourth place at one-over.
GIRLS 16-19: Vidovic, who will be a senior at Aurora, holds a 4-shot lead over Broadview Heights’ Gianna Reginelli (33-40=73) after going 34-35. Eastlake’s Lauren Iannetta (36-39=75) and Annelise Stencil (36-39=75) share third place.
BOYS 14-15: Hudson’s Dexter James (37-35=72) has a one-shot lead over Akron’s Tommy Kinder (35-38=73) and Independence’s Kaden Schuette (37-36=73).
BOYS 11-13: Newark’s Mason Beatty (37-39=76) will take a 4-shot lead into the final round with Mansfield’s Jacob Snay (37-43=80) and Rocky River’s Coleson Paez (38-43=81) the closest pursuers.
GIRLS 11-15: Stow’s Sarah Vojtko (36-37=72) and Fairview Park’s Kayla Knaze (38-35=73) on top, followed by Hudson’s Elena Varga (40-36=76) and Yumi Kohara (38-38=76) of Cuyahoga Falls.
