NOPGA WINS FOURTH STRAIGHT OHIO CUP BY DOMINATING SINGLES MATCHES ON SECOND DAY
Members of the Northern Ohio Section of the Professional Golfers Association of America (NOPGA) dominated singles play on Wednesday to win their fourth straight Ohio Cup, with an 18.5 to 13.5 victory over their counterparts from the Southern Ohio PGA (SOPGA) on the South Course of Firestone Country Club.
Oddly, the NOPGA won by the identical score in 2019.
The NOPGA entered the second day of competition trailing by one point after Tuesday’s first two rounds of Four-Ball and Foursomes. But they won nine of the 16 singles matches to outscore the SOPGA, 11-5, in raising its overall record to 16-8.
The SOPGA, which led by three points after the first round but could not capitalize, will play host to the event in 2021 at a site to be determined.
In singles play the NOPGA won nine matches, lost three and tied – or halved – four.
Pepper Pike Head Golf Professional Rob Moss, Barrington Head Golf Professional Mark Sierak and Tony Adcock of Seven Hills, led the NOPGA by winning all three of their matches.
Jeff Olson, General Manager of the Golf Club of Dublin, went 3-0 in his matches for the SOPGA.
The NOPGA’s Gary Robison, Director of Golf at Brookside Country Club, went 2-0-1.
The SOPGA’s Andy Montgomery (Kinsale Golf and Fitness Club), Daniel Sorgini (Blacklick Woods Metro Golf Course), Caleb Wittig (Zanesville Country Club), Chase Wilson (Columbus Country Club), Craig Goldsberry (PGA of America Lifetime Member) and the NOPGA’s Tom Atchison (Salem Golf Club) won two of three matches.
2020 marked the first captaincy by Gary Trivisonno for Team NOPGA in the Ohio Cup Matches. While his on-course strategy was impeccable in victory, his post-round performance needs a bit more practice:
