FINAL RESULTS: 2022 Northeast Ohio Amateur Championship

NOGA logo 2022The last four holes of the 92nd Northeast Ohio Amateur Championship determined the name that would be engraved along side Arnold Palmer’s.

Dublin resident and Dayton Flyers collegiate golfer Blake Solomon and Akron resident and former Duke golfer Aaron Crewse separated themselves from the rest of the field then battled it out for the title, tied at 1-under par for the championship with just four holes left to play.

But Crewse failed to get up-and-down for par on the tough 15th at Windmill Lakes, and Solomon did.

Then Solomon made birdie on the par-5 16th hole, and Crewse settled for par.

Those two shots in two holes made all the difference.

“The 15th was huge, it kept the momentum going,” said Solomon of his par save that gave him the outright lead. “On 16, I just got it up by the green, got a chip close, made the putt.”

Solomon finished as the only player under par for the three day, 54-hole tournament at the par-70 Windmill Lakes Golf Club, posting a 1-under par 209 total.

“Coming down in, it was ‘hit the fairway, find the green, and two putt’,” Solomon said of his play after grabbing the two shot lead. “Unfortunately I didn’t do that on 18, but I got it done regardless.”

Rounding out the top finishers in the Championship Division, Zander Gibson of Concord finished solo third at 213, while Medina’s Andrew Grayson and Youngstown’s Bryan Kordupel shared T4 another shot back.

As his consolation prize, Crewse won the Mid-Amateur Division (for players age 25+) by two shots over Grayson, with a 212 total. Clevelander Jeff Blechschmidt took third place in the Mid-Am at 215.

Kurt Peterson, 2022 NEO Am Senior Champion

In the Senior Division, Kurt Peterson of Bolivar posted a solid final round score of 2-under par 68, the lowest Senior score of the week, to leapfrog the rest of the players on a jammed leaderboard. Starting the day one shot back in a four-way tie for second place, Peterson turned in 33 after making three birdies on the front side, then cruised home with an even par back nine to win by two shots.

“It felt good. I wanted to keep it in play all day, stay out of trouble then try to make some putts,” said Peterson. “And that’s really what I did. I stayed away from big numbers. I had an early three-putt, but after that I putted well all day.”

Brad Steven of Concord finished in solo second place after a Monday 69 of his own, jumping over a host of contenders as well.

NEO Womens AmIt took a playoff to determine a winner of the second annual Northeast Ohio Women’s Amateur Championship.

Emily Holzopfel from Rayland, Ohio caught first-round leader Margaret Williams of Wooster on Monday, with both players finishing at a 36-hole score of 153.

Holzopfel then made a par on the first playoff hole to secure the victory.

“Coming into the tournament, I knew I had to do pretty well,” said Holzopfel about the effort required to win. “On Day 1, I didn’t hit the ball as well as I could have, or scored as well. But I knew today I just had to rally and get it done.”

Shirley Vaughn with Robb Schulze
Robb Schulze presents the Senior NEO Women’s Am trophy to Shirley Vaughn.

Canton’s Shirley Vaughn played well enough to earn a wire-to-wire victory in the Senior Division of the second NEOWA, holding off Gail Hackett of Canton by two shots.

“It was a little bumpier today with a triple and a double on the front nine,” said Vaughn. “But I was able to bounce back on the back nine and hit the ball better. The conditions changed with the wind picking up, it was much more difficult to score today. I was able to hang in there and come home with a win.”

Cari Hetler, 2022 NEOWA

The shot of the day from all five divisions on Monday at Windmill Lakes belonged to Green’s Cari Hetler, as she aced the par-3 eighth hole from 139 yards with an 8 iron.
