The wildly sloping green of the 18th hole at The Elms Country Club determined the winner of the 2018 Tigertown Open.
Four different professional golfers came to the 18th tee looking for victory. Each one of them made a different score on that hole, scores that ranged from par to cataclysmic.
It was the champion, former CSU Vikings golfer and Toledo native Michael Balcar, who was able to secure the par on 18, and with it the championship. Balcar hit his second shot from the fairway to the front fringe, ran his third up the hill short of the hole, then made the par putt to post 7-under par 65 in the morning wave. Balcar knew he needed to stay back with his second, having learned his lesson from the double-bogey he made the day prior in the pro-am.
Kevin Kraft and Chase Wilson were not as fortunate. Well aware of the posted score in the clubhouse, Kraft made bogey and Wilson double-bogey on 18 in the afternoon, each seeing the ball run away from the hole with their third shots. Both players finished at 6-under par 66 to tie for second place.
But the most frustrating result of all at the 18th belonged to Canal Fulton’s Justin Lower, who currently plays on the Web.com Tour. Lower struggled to a triple-bogey 7 on the finale and plunged all the way down to T7 at 68 for the 67th edition of Tigertown.
In the Amateur Division, a pair of players posted 4-under par 68 to tie at the top.
18-year old Bentley Stover of Pepper Pike (pictured below), the North Coast Junior Tour player who has been on a tear this year in that association, shared the top spot with Ohio Valley University player Adam O’Hara (left). The pair finished two shots ahead of four players at 70.
Uniontown’s Bobby Spino captured the Senior Amateur Division with a 2-under par 70, winning by three shots over a trio of players.
Perennial Tigertown money-winner Jim Cichra of Pittsburgh captured the Senior Professional Division, shooting 2-under par 70 to win by two shots over Jim Karr of Columbia Hills.
A giant field of 182 players registered for the 2018 Tigertown Open. The forecast for severe storms brought only a few stray showers, allowing the record field to get around with only a very short delay.
