History was made Wednesday during the playing of the 101st Pyramid Treating Ohio Open on the North Course of Westfield Country Club.
Just not in the vein that many anticipated.
Despite opening with a tournament-leading 3-under 67 on Monday and being in contention from start to finish, Hartville’s Jake McBride did not become the first back-to-back winner since Stephen Gangluff in 2018-2019.
Despite firing himself into contention with a second-round 4-under 66 on Tuesday and contending for most of the day on Wednesday, three-time Open champion Bob Sowards, 54, did not become the third four-time winner of the Open and did not become the first player to win the Ohio Open and the Ohio Senior Open in the same year since that became a possibility 36 years ago.
Ohio golf fans, say hello to Jordan Gilkison, who created his own legacy on Wednesday when he shot a final-round 5-under 65 to become the first amateur to win the Ohio Open in 44 years.
With rounds of 72-63-65 Gilkison, a sophomore at Kent State from Springboro, finished the tournament at 10-under 200 for a one stroke victory over Wright State senior Mikkel Mathiesen to become the first non-professional to win the Open since Bobby Lewis in 1978 when the event was held at Mill Creek in Boardman.
Only five other amateurs, including Jack Nicklaus in 1956, have won what is regarded as the state championship.
Mathiesen, a native of Denmark, finished second with rounds and of 69-65-67 and Avery Schneider, from New Albany, was third at 70-67-65—202.
McBride (Hartville) and Sowards, from Dublin, finished in a tie for fourth at 203, along with Gilkison’s older brother, Josh, a recent Kent State graduate. All finished at 7-under, as McBride closed with a 4-under 66 and Sowards and Josh Gilkison came in at 69.

Jordan Gilkison, a former Ohio high school Division I state champion, began the day one stroke behind his brother, Mason Lenhart (Cincinnati), Mathiesen and Sowards.
He birdied the first two holes and took over sole possession of the lead with another birdie on the fifth. However, the big swing came nine holes later when he eagled the 552-yard 14th hole after eight consecutive pars.
He hit a 3-wood off the tee, leaving him 255 yards to the hole. Taking advantage of a down-wind, he knocked his second shot to five feet with a 4-iron and calmly made the putt.
“The hole was down-wind and the widest part of the fairway would have been at 285 so a driver would have been too much,” said Gilkison, who turns 20-years old next month. “The 3-wood was perfect.”
Gilkison said his intention was to land his second shot in the right-front bunker.
“It wasn’t my intention to go for the green,” he said. “I wanted to land it in the front bunker because I figured it would be an easy up-and-down (for birdie) but I pushed it like just enough, right at the flag and it one-hopped over the bunker to about five feet. It was a good shot but there also was a lot of good fortune.”
As it turned out it was the shot of the tournament.
From that point on he played smart, conservative golf, content with hitting fairways and greens and two-putting for par.
“It was a solid day, pars are good,” he said. “I didn’t realize it had been that long (between amateur champs) but this is a special honor, for sure.”
Sowards, arguably the most talented senior player in Ohio, reached 7-under after the first nine holes, but bogeys on the 10th and 12th cost him dearly. Birdies on two of his final five holes came just a little too late.
“I just couldn’t run him down,” Sowards said of Gilkison, 35 years his junior. “He played great. I hit the ball better than the first two days but I just couldn’t make any putts.”
Soon to be inducted into the Ohio Golf Hall-of-Fame, Sowards said he was already looking forward to returning to Westfield in 2023.
“I can’t wait to try ‘em again next year,” he said.

Gilkison’s mother, Jody, tried to follow both of her sons from the gallery. Older son Josh played in the final group of the day while Jordan was in the penultimate group. Separated by one stroke at the day’s outset, a brother vs. brother playoff was not out of the question.
“If there would have been a playoff I think my mom would have lost it,” said Gilkison, who tied Rickie Fowler’s course-record of 64 at the Country Club of Hudson during the 2021 USGA Junior Boys qualifier.

While he was the first amateur to win the Open in 44 years he was not the youngest. That distinction belongs to one Jack W. Nicklaus, who was 15-years-old when he won in 1956.
Some standards, history-making or otherwise, are just too tough to break.
